Using a sample of 232 MBA alumni, we tested the impact of respondent age, gender, and their interaction on career progress outcomes (managerial level, number of promotions, and salary) and whether age‐ and gender‐type of contexts moderated these relationships. Women's salaries did not increase much with age, whereas men's salaries showed a marked increase with age. We also found a gender × job gender‐type effect on salary, such that women earned somewhat higher salaries in masculine‐typed jobs, while men earned considerably higher salaries in feminine‐typed jobs. In addition, we observed a three‐way interaction between gender, age, and age‐type of industry indicating that younger men received more promotions in old‐typed industries, while younger women received more promotions in young‐typed ones. Particulate matter (PM) sources at four different monitoring sites in Alexandra, New Zealand, were investigated on an hourly timescale. Three of the sites were located on a horizontal transect, upwind, central, and downwind of the general katabatic flow pathway. The fourth monitoring site was located at the central site, but at a height of 26 m, using a knuckleboom, when wind conditions permitted. Average hourly PM10 (PM with an aerodynamic diameter <10 μm) concentrations in Alexandra showed slightly different diurnal profiles depending on the sampling site location. Each location did, however, feature a large evening peak and smaller morning peak in PM10 concentrations. The central site in Alexandra experienced the highest PM10 concentrations as a result of PM transport along a number of katabatic flow pathways. A significant difference in PM10 concentrations between the central and elevated sites indicated that a shallow inversion layer formed below the elevated site, limiting the vertical dispersion of pollutants. Four PM10 sources were identified at each of the sites: biomass combustion, vehicles, crustal matter, and marine aerosol. Biomass combustion was identified as the most significant source of PM10, contributing up to 91% of the measured PM10. Plots of the average hourly source contributions to each site revealed that biomass combustion was responsible for both the evening and morning peaks in PM10 concentrations observed at each of the sites, suggesting that Alexandra residents were relighting their fires when they rose in the morning. The identification of PM sources on an hourly timescale can have significant implications for air quality management.
Implications: Monitoring the sources of PM10 on an hourly timescale at multiple sites within an airshed provides extremely useful information for air quality management. Sources responsible for observed peaks in measured diurnal PM10 concentration profiles can be easily identified and targeted for reduction. Also, hourly PM10 sampling can provide crucial information on the role meteorology plays in the development of elevated PM10 concentrations. 相似文献

Air quality in the vicinity of airports is examined with particular reference to a detailed study of Gatwick Airport (UK). Ambient air concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons (total and non-methane), oxides of nitrogen, smoke and airborne particulate lead have been measured at seven locations around the airport. The results obtained have been compared with ambient air quality guidelines, where available, and with results from other monitoring sites in the UK. Summary Though strong concern over the rapid conversion of moist tropical forests may justifiably arise from any discipline, a growing
interdisciplinary tide of voices is expressing its alarm over a particularly disturbing consequence of forest alteration and
destruction: the reduction of species diversity through the extinction of numerous plant and animal species. Consequently,
an array of ecologists land-use planners, botanists, zoologists and conservationsts are searching for means to enhance the
protection and preservation of tropical forests' biotic diversity. Management schemes aimed at achieving this particular end
are being investigated, particularly by UNESCO's Man and Biosphere (MAB) Project 8 of Biosphere Reserves Projects, by the
International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) tropical forests conservation program (UNEP,
1980) and by the World Wildlife Fund. In addition, many countries with a significant area of moist tropical forest (MTF) are
beginning to pursue some form of conservation strategy.
Currently Robert T. Perry is a full-time teacher of biology at a private school for a cademically gifted students in the Brooklyn
area. In addition he has designed and is teaching courses in environmental chemistry and ethology to advanced high-schoolers.
He is also an adjunct instructor for the City College of the City University of New York, where he is teaching graduate students

A synthetic, mixed-metal solution has been stabilised by treatment with sodium hydroxide, sodium sulphide, and sodium silicate, respectively. The three stabilised filter cakes have subsequently been solidified using additions of ordinary Portland cement and pulverised fuel ash (PFA) which are typically used in UK solidification operations. Both the stabilised filter cakes and the solidified wastes have been subjected to an equilibrium extraction test, a modified TCLP test, and a series of single-extraction, batch leach tests using an increasingly acidic leachant. Metal release was found to be primarily dependent on the pH of the leachate. Under mildly acidic conditions, the percentages leached from the stabilised and the stabilised/solidified wastes were comparable for most metals. A high-volume fraction of these solidified wastes is occupied by the stabilised filter cake. When they are broken up and tested in single-extraction leach tests, the primary effect of the cementitious additives is to increase the pH of the leachate so that most heavy metals remain insoluble. When tested under acidic leachate conditions, copper, lead, and mercury were found to be particularly well retained within sodium sulphide stabilised wastes. Foreign-owned industry in the form of assembly plants, termed maquiladora, has become very important in Mexico to the extent
that it represents the second largest source of foreign exchange and is a valuable source for employment and regional development.
The economic prosperity gained from the rapid growth of the maquiladora industry has been accompanied by increased environmental
and human health risks associated with generation of hazardous waste. Diversification of industry has resulted in the predomination
of those sectors that likely use hazardous substances. The Mexicali-Calexico border region was selected to demonstrate the
potential for environmental and health risks associated with the generation of hazardous waste. Estimates for the generation
of hazardous waste were obtained from 34 maquiladora plants in Mexicali, represented by the electronic and electrical equipment
and parts, mechanical and transportation equipment, and toys and sporting equipment sectors. Repeated detection of volatile
organic compounds in the New River at the US-Mexico border suggests that hazardous waste from the printed circuit board industry
in Mexicali is not being disposed of in a proper manner. Potential adverse health effects, such as carcinogenic and mutagenic
responses associated with the detected volatiles, are discussed. US and Mexico national legislation and the Binational Environmental
Agreement were examined for their adequacy to ensure proper management of hazardous waste generated by the maquiladora industry.
Environmental policy options are presented that focus on: (1) increased environmental accountability of US parent companies
for their maquiladora assembly plants in Mexico; and (2) more integration between US Customs and border states with the US
Environmental Protection Agency to improve the binational management of hazardous waste generated by the maquiladora industry. 相似文献

Extensive criticism of water quality monitoring programs has developed as costs are compared with the benefits produced by monitoring efforts. Collecting water quality data while developing understanding of the functional character of the environment will improve water quality monitoring data utility in environmental management. The environmental audit characterizes the attributes of the natural environment (that is, attribute type, intensity, and variability), providing a theoretical as well as practical foundation for data interpretation. In the view proposed here, traditional monitoring means the very narrow activity of collecting samples and perhaps analyzing them and storing the analyses. In the environmental audit, these activities are a mechanism to systematically improve environmental monitoring and assessment by improving the design and implementation of environmental programs. Budget changes, whether positive or negative, in water quality management agencies often mean a change in resources available for water quality monitoring. Many state agencies are currently facing monitoring budget cuts and, as a result, are reevaluating their monitoring programs. Such evaluations make use of a number of information sources, not the least of which are monitoring activities in other states. This article reports results of a survey of all fifty state water quality monitoring programs. Twenty questions were asked in the general areas of fixed-station monitoring, special studies, and biological monitoring. Each state was contacted by telephone at least twice during the survey. Fixed-station monitoring is conducted by 48 of 50 states. An average of 75 stations per state are sampled, generally on a monthly basis. There is a large variation in the way data are analyzed by the states; water quality indices and plots of concentration or loading over time are the most common methods. All but three states conduct special studies, but only seven repeat the studies on a regular basis. Special studies are generally problem specific as opposed to basin oriented. Biological monitoring is performed by 33 states; however, this is an area in which budget cuts are having a noticeable impact. In some cases, biological monitoring is being completely eliminated or suspended. Macroinvertebrate sampling is performed quarterly to biannualiy by 50% of the states; 75% of the states that sample macroinvertebrates do so annually. Periphyton sampling is performed by 33% of the states. Over 50% of the states are in the process of revising, or have revised, their monitoring program during the past five years. However, only four states had a detailed rationale and operating procedure for the entire monitoring system. Results of the survey are, therefore, averages of existing monitoring programs. Average results do not necessarily represent ideal situations, but do give an indication of how states are coping with their monitoring responsibilities. 相似文献
